As we'll often state, our babies aren't treated as mere stock, but each one enters our home as part of our family. We're never in a rush to place a puppy out, or to force one of our babies to go to a home that's not perfect for them. Each of our babies stays in our home as just another of our dogs until he or she is absolutely ready to leave!
Some of our foundation adults are accomplished in community work, such as Therapy dogs working with the elderly, or Emotional Support Animals working with immigrants with PTSD. We're so blessed to say that our dogs have really marked a positive difference in the lives of those that they help. Although our program mainly focuses on raising family companions, we also begin implementing some of the basics of our community work in our puppy curriculum. Thanks to our point of view that every puppy should be a contributing member of their family, a lot of the puppies placed have gone on to be accomplished ESAs for their own families!
Our curriculum is not basic in the slightest. We aim to make bettering our dogs the bulk of our career, which displays itself in many way. Not only with our adult dogs, but our puppies also become immersed in the activities we participate in our day to day. From Early Neurological Stimulation, Early Scent Introduction, Volhard PAT, & tests designed to identify which puppy would do best in an ESA setting. We desensitize starting at 2 weeks, doing scent, taste, sound, texture, grooming, handling, temperature, people, animals, & settings.
At birth, we begin health evaluations to rule out any deformities that need our attentions, such as cleft palate or physical differences. From there, each puppy gets dewormed every 2 weeks, dewclaws & tails get docked (where applicable), & constant updates are sent to our on-call vet to check on minor health concerns to keep everyone healthy. All of the appropriate rounds of shots are began once puppies are 8 weeks, done by a medical professional, never at home!
Each of our puppies is unique to us, & we take the time to get to know each pup in a litter. Our detailed curriculum & early intervention that we do when are litters are newly born allow us to get a closer view at how each puppy behaves & develops. It may seem unbelievable, but as soon as a baby is born, we begin to notice little. quirks about their personalities. From birth until the time they leave our home, taking careful notes of all the reactions to different situations & stimuli help us understand their needs. This, in addition to early temperament testing, we can make better pairings to their forever families. Being in a home environment allows them to learn & become familiar with the settings they'll have in their home setting, but at their pace. We can observe & help them improve in the skills that they lack, expanding in areas they need better control over. With this thorough attention, we can put out confident, loving family companions!
The reason we put a lot of effort into the testing we do, is because it lets us present a solid rubric of each pup to the interested families. As part of our application process, we aim to make the best match according to the lifestyle & personality the family is looking for in their new puppy. By giving this part of the adoption process proper importance, we can ensure harmonious matches for each pup!
The tests themselves are done in a manner that puts a mild degree of stress on the puppy in an unfamiliar sphere, accompanied by a tester & a scorer. Each trait is carefully recorded on each of the 10 different slots on the reaction rubric, which the adopting family can find in the puppy folder that goes in each Puppy Go Home Kit. The tests are as follows: Social Attraction, Following, Restraint, Social Dominance, Elevation Dominance, Retrieving, Touch Sensitivity, Sound Sensitivity, Sight Sensitivity, Stability, & Structure.
Temperament testing is a method used to evaluate a puppy's personality traits & behavioral tendencies. Particularly the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test, which is the tests we use, was actually developed to test children in a similar manner. However, it is extremely effective for puppies, completed at 6-7 weeks old.
We believe that a puppy should enter their new home with the necessary skills to handle new experiences with confidence & curiosity. Knowing how to behave themselves when experiencing something new allows our pups to interact with their new family & surroundings, sharing new memories together. Early exposure to sounds, smells, foods, textures, places, & people covers a majority of what they'll see in their forever homes!
Given the nature of our breeds, since birth we have to be handling each baby, carefully keeping notes of how each puppy grows, of any weight fluctuations, feeding schedules, & so many more important details that are essential to their health. Since they rely on us to help guide them through basic puppy functions, they become accustomed to all the handling they'll get once in their forever homes, making them confident, tolerant & relaxed when being loved!
Early Neurological Stimulation paired with Early Scent Introduction are a sort of desensitizing we do in order to help jumpstart the natural process in our newborns. Improved cardiovascular performance, stronger heartbeats, stronger adrenal glands, increased stress tolerance, along with greater disease resistance are just some of the ways that ENS & ESI can benefit our growing pups.
Potty training goes hand in hand with kennel training, as the routines will be closely intertwined to make both kenneling & potty training successful. We teach our pups keep indoor spaces & their kennels clean, ultimately only using outside for potty. Our goal is to send our pups as close to fully potty trained as possible.
The additional week(s) are spent acclimating our litters to the routine they can expect to follow in their new homes. Following a procedure, we gradually transition each pup to sleep & settle in their own kennels, eventually spending the entire night on their own. We aim to build a positive association to kennels or enclosed spaces, setting up the foundations for less stress on the pup on their first nights home.
We're extremely grateful to be able to count on the work of an on-call private professional groomer, who regularly visits to provide an important aspect of our curriculum. By working closely alongside our groomer, both of our breeds can become accustomed to the sort of care they'll need as the grow. From bathing, to grooming & especially when teaching day to day hygiene.
Our puppies are precious to us for all their lives, hence why we aim to keep an open line of communication with our families, even after pups have gone home. We encourage puppy parents to reach out with questions, concerns, or advice on how to raise or care for their puppy, even into adulthood. We also send home a timeline of when you can expect to hear from us after you take your pup home: 1 day after going home, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 11 months (we'll send a reminder of the spay/neuter appointment pending), & once the puppy turns a year old, we'll verify that the spay or neuter has been completed. There after, we'll check in yearly!
Our Go Home Kits are curated to the color & style preference of the adopting family, & the needs of each puppy. The kit itself is full of supplies that'll be useful for the first month or so with your puppy. We provide grooming supplies, teething toys, treats & puppy kibble, health essentials, personalized collar & tag, & many other things! We also send along a detailed puppy folder full of useful info on your new pup.
As part of the curriculum we follow, our pups stay an additional few weeks past the date they're old enough to join their new families. Between 8-10 weeks, we accelerate the course of learning to equip our pups with manners and skills that will help them adjust in their new homes. Kennel training, to get puppy used to a safe resting spot. Basic obedience training to jumpstart manners, & of course, potty training outside to help puppies learn to keep their living area clean!
All of our pups are sold with limited pet AKC registration papers, which are sent via an email referral. Through the pedigree certificate of your pup, you can see the exemplary lineage behind each litter. When registering with the prepaid AKC, adopting families are also offered a free 30 day trial for pet insurance!
At 8 weeks our litters go in for their scheduled vet exams & vaccinations. A wellness examination is recorded, where each part of the puppy is cleared for being in perfect health. Along with the health report, vaccination records are drafted, & a microchip inserted with the breeder's information.
